The Turuls of Transcarpathia
The bronze statue of an eagle, “
Turul”, stands on one of the bastions of the “
Palanok” castle in
Mukachevo town. The weight of this “Turul” is 850 kilograms. The wingspan is 4 meters. The height of the statue is 2 meters. Alexander Andyaloshi is the author of the statue. The mythical bird “Turul”, holding a sword in its claws, is the national symbol of Hungary.
According to the legend, this bird was leading the Ugric tribes and showed them the way through the “Russian Gates”. The legend also says that the “Turul” brought the sword in its beak to Ferenc Rákóczi during the rebellion of the Kuruts. The monument is dedicated to “the finding of homeland by Hungarian people”. The fact of opening of this monument has already caused many scandals and political conflicts. Nowadays the monuments to “Turul” are put in the Transcarpathian villages Vilok, Dolgoye, Vyshkovo, also in Tyachiv town and in the yard of Uzhgorod castle (quite for a while already, not a new one).
