This castle was built in the XII century in the area where the village of the Serednye is now located. According to one version castle was erected by the representatives of the strongest catholic order of the Templers at the time. After the order ceased existing in 1312, the castle was transferred over to the monks of the St. Paul’s order. The castle suffered significant damage during the liberation War of the Hungarian people in the 1703-1711. The contemporary historians who study the castle are inclined to consider it as the oldest castle of the Transcarpatia based on how the stoned walls are constructed.

To follow up on the invitation of the Vinogradovo underground separatist movement "
Vinogradovo – the capital of Transcarpathia" we visited perhaps the most attractive sight seeing spot of the town of Vinogradovo, the
Kankov castle. Actually, only the ruins of the castle remain and are found at the bottom of a former volcano known as
Cherna gora (
656 m above the sea level). This mountain also happens to be home to the botanical garden known for its unique population of the silver lindens.
