The Monument of the abolition of serfdom
The village
Nyzhnie Vorota (ua:
Нижні Ворота) of Volovets region is located at an altitude of 448 masl. Till 1946 village was known as
Nyzhnie Veretskie (ua:
Нижні Верецькі). It stands on the banks of Latorytsya River. In 1971 the village got the status of "urban village" but now it has a status of "village" again.
The village
Verkhnie Vorota (ua:
Верхні Ворота) of Volovets region is located at an altitude of 489 masl. Till 1947 village was known as
Verkhnie Veretskie (ua:
Верхні Верецькі). It stands on the banks of
Slavka River (ua:
Славка) which is the tributary of the Latorytsya.
There is a sacred source and a monument over it which is dedicated to the abolition of serfdom. It is on the road between the villages Nyzhnie Vorota and Verkhnie Vorota.
There is an inscription on the memorial plate: «
The historical monument of the XVIII century of the abolition of serfdom in 1848. It was renewed in 1928 by Grygom I.M. and Demian I.V. and it was renewed again in 1989». As for me I do not understand the usage of the phrase «monument of the XVIII century» as the event to which this memorial was dedicated has been in the 19th century. Maybe it was really established in the 18th century. Nevertheless, it seems to me that this is an error of the modern "restorers".
There are two big linden trees over the memorial. It is a popular place for tourists to stop, have a rest and drink some holy water.
I for example could not understand the thing in which the pipe is and the water is flowing through it. As for me it looks like pagan god…
A Holy Mother is in the place with gratings in order to protect it from vandals and other thieves. Nevertheless, I could take some photos.
