Lumshory Waterfalls
Just for the sake of fun, ask your friends how many waterfalls do they know in
Lumshory village of the Perechyn region. The most open-hearted will say, “One, the Partizan”, and they will be wrong. The smarter ones will suspect the trick. Remembering that somebody has told them that before the Partizan there is another waterfall they will answer, “There are two – Partizan and the one down the stream”. The most intelligent people will answer that there are several waterfalls, but Partizan and Solovey are the most popular while the others are not so fabulous”. They as well will be mistaken. The cleverest scientists and tourists will say that there are four waterfalls and will name them. Please, do not hurry to trust them. They are wrong, too. Having wasted only a few minutes of your time to read this article you could become a genuine specialist of Lumshory waterfalls. So, let’s study this issue in details.
The village
Lumshory (Slovak:
Lumšur,
Lumšory, Hungarian:
Rónafüred) of the Perechyn area stands on a little river or rather a stream
Turitsa (local:
Turichka) on the 455 meters above the sea level. According to the last census in 2001, the village had 84 residents. Lumshory is a balneological resort. The first medical establishment dates from 1600. The term “Lumshory resort” appeared in the 18th century. The village is known primarily due to its healthy sulphur-hydrogen mineral streams. There is a huge swimming pool with mineral water near the hostel. Lots of mineral baths have appeared along the stream recently. It is the main factor that attracts tourists to Lumshory like honey attracts bees. Just imagine… Your companions and you undress and lie down in a tank with mineral water. The space in the tank is limited, that’s why you can easily find that the legs of the girl, who lies opposite, are exactly on your knees. The fire under the tank is burning, making the embers crackle. A gloomy stoker regularly adds firewood and tells local-colour jokes, while you every 10 minutes jump out of the tank and flow into the icy water of the Turitsa. The feelings are just wonderful! They say, the tanks are made of a special alloy which does not get warm from the fire. Only the bottom of the tank, which is covered with stones, warms up.
Some other places of interest are also popular among tourists. They include the following: the
Partizan and
Solovey waterfalls, the mountaineers’ valley (full of rocks), the valley of fairytales, a 300 meters long ski-track, the road to
Komsomol lake and
Gora Polonina-Runa.
Let’s go back to the waterfalls. There are 5 more or less huge waterfalls in Lumshory. While walking up along the stream to its source one can find lots of interesting things. Except huge waterfalls, at the distance of several kilometers there are nearly 10 little (less than 1 meter high) waterfalls.
The first waterfall, which is the closest to the hostels, is the “
Solovey” waterfall. Its shape looks like a crab. Its height varies from 2 to 3 meters depending on the season, the quantity of melting snow around and the quantity of rubble downstream.
The second waterfall further up the stream is not so high. Its water falls down into the river Turitsa from the left tributary. Local people call this waterfall “
Burkach”. The picture was taken in the period when the waterfall was not in its full water saturation. The height is 1.5-2 meters.
The third waterfall, the most beautiful and the largest, is known as “
Red Partizan”. This name hasn’t been changed from the times of the Soviet Union. The first word was lost in the course of time, so nowadays everyone calls it just “
Partizan”. The local citizens strongly dislike the name used in the Soviet Union. Pretending that they have never heard about the “Partizan” waterfall, they state that their waterfall is called “
Davir”. It is difficult to assess the height of this waterfall because under the pressure of falling water the bottom level is constantly changing. The water passes the long way in the rock before it falls down. It is approximately 4-6 meters high.
Another view a little bit from aside. The picture was taken in the moment of middle water saturation. In times of full saturation the height of the stream line increases up to 1 more meter.
The fourth waterfall under consideration is called “
Perestupen’”. It consists of a few cascades with 1 meter difference of heights. One of the banks near this waterfall is equipped with the arbor for recreation and a zone for picnics.
The fifth and the last waterfall just near the upper hostel is actually named “The Waterfall” and is situated in the Kichera - “
Krutylo” tract. It is more than 3 meters high. Its streamline has created a deep and perfectly suitable for swimming space.
If you have kept in mind everything that you have read and will be able to remember the objects from the pictures and their names, then you can easily consider yourself as “
a specialist of Lumshory waterfalls”.
