The Kankov Castle
To follow up on the invitation of the Vinogradovo underground separatist movement "
Vinogradovo – the capital of Transcarpathia" we visited perhaps the most attractive sight seeing spot of the town of Vinogradovo, the
Kankov castle. Actually, only the ruins of the castle remain and are found at the bottom of a former volcano known as
Cherna gora (
656 m above the sea level). This mountain also happens to be home to the botanical garden known for its unique population of the silver lindens.
The cleanliness of the area and the numerous newly built trails are the clear signs of the recent tidying up efforts, which made the trip quite pleasant.
Historical record:
The ruins of Kankov castle. Back in XI century this used to be a wooden fortifying fortress. In 1399 Zsigmond I decides to give the fortress as a gift to the Pereni family. The new owners rebuilt the fortification to be completely made out of stone. In the XV century the Perenyi family transferred the fortress over to the monks which turned it into a monastery. But in 1566 during the religious wars in the region, the fortress was completely ruined by the military forces of the Austrian Empire lead by the general Tekelessy.
Several interesting shots:
The view of the most authentic wall of the castle
The remnants of one of the corner fortifications:
I’m not exactly sure of what purpose this particular building might have been serving but it’s definitely the most well preserved element of the whole castle. It looks like a small church of some sort.
A detailed look at the walls:
