Water Mills of Imstychevo village. Part Two.
The continuation of the
article about the water mills of the village
Imstichevo (ukr:
Іmstychovo). It is told about the operating water mill in the first part of the story and about two abandoned mills, where necessarily evil spirits can be found, located just above the creek.
Let’s go 150 meters upstream through the glade and we would get right to the first, the most preserved one of two abandoned mills. A stone foundation has remained from old times. There is "adobe" under the slate roof. There is the "water wheel" and the diverter trough on the right.
Here is a stone and "adobe" laying close-up. The water flow is very powerful. It is so noisy near it that it is difficult to speak even standing side by side.
There is a fully overwhelmed canopy on the opposite of the mill.
It is an old window. It is visible on the frame. Here are skewed slopes from time. It is a sad sight…
Here is the wheel with the trough and the pressure of water close-up. Pay your attention what high the walls of the trough are. This is necessary in order to increase the height of the water jet and make its impact on the wheel blades more efficient.
Bearings have never existed in old water mills in nature. Everything is in the old fashioned way – a metal axis, stuck in a wooden axle, which is enshrined in the whole wheel, is spinning in the groove in the wooden pole. Other three metal hoops are added to the construction to secure the metal axis in a wooden axle for greater reliability.
And this sad sight – is the most "killed" mill. The walls are breathing in the incense, and the fact that they are stone, still "holds them in the upright position". The roof is sunk.
It is the chaos inside ... Broken tiles, the remains of mechanisms. Everything is rotting in the rain…
We went to the door of a preserved mill of abandoned ones, touched the handle. It was open. We entered. Everything was outdated inside. It is the remains of the mill construction in the photo below.
A metal millstone tightened with hoop was propped to the wall.
It is the old bench. Her more "carving sister" is set in the form of an exhibit in the
Castle of Chinadiyevo (
here are the photos of the bench). This one is just standing at a wall in an old mill. No one needs it…
It is an old furnace at the wall. It is completely eaten by rust. Pay attention to her "legs". It is an interesting element of decor combined with the simplicity of all the other parts.
Traditionally, there is an old furnace at the exit of the mill.
There are more attractions in the village Imstichevo in addition to the old water mills. They are Jewish cemetery described in the first part; the St. Michael's Monastery of St. Basil the Great rank, a boarding school for children with developmental disabilities is located on its territory, and beautiful modern red-brick church in the village center. But it will be told about these in the following articles.
