The Saint-Miklos Castle. Part three.
The continuation of the story of about my trip to
Saint Miklos castle in the village in
Chinadievo in the fall of 2008.
The exhibit contains numerous books. Part of them came from the Schenborn’s family library.
This is the traditional stuff for Transcarpatian museum exhibits. The youngest showpiece here was the abacus.
Check this beauty out. Again the contour of the original arch is clearly seen and the greenish paint is a clear indicator of the soviet era. Behind the door is the stone stairway heading up to the second floor.
This is the second floor. It looks totally abandoned although the roof was renovated in 2002-2004. More archs can be seen here.
This is part of the third floor. Many of the castle walls contain ventilation channels. The wood would be burnt at the bottom in the special indentations and the hot air would be distributed through these "channels" to keep the building warm. By the way, a human skeleton was discovered in one such wall during the renovations. According to the ancient legend, the burial of the human within the castle walls would strengthen the fortification power of castle. Oddly enough, it had to be a woman too.
…this is an example of one such channel…
This is by far the biggest scar left by the military construction forces. Some walls were partially demolished in this area just so that a wooden stairwell could be placed here.
The famous bedroom. The window at the back used to be a door to the small balcony. The rumour has it, it was in this very bedroom that Ilona Zrinyi and Imre Tekeli used to hook up on numerous occasions.
This is Joseph Bartosh himself. I would like to express my huge thanks to him first of all for the tour but also for his enthusiasm when it comes to the renovation of the historical heritage of the Transcarpathia. I hope the renovation of the castle will be rapid.
